Michael Owen takes swipe at Manchester United when comparing the team to Liverpool

Former England ace Michael Owen has taken a swipe at Manchester United for how the team has performed over the years when compared to Liverpool.

But the Red Devils have found their bearings this season. On the other hand, the Merseysiders have found it difficult to put in decent performances, evidently looking off the pace.

Ex-Premier League centre-forward Owen, speaking on BT Sport (h/t Metro), reflected upon Liverpool’s Napoli result ahead of Ajax’s trip to Merseyside. The 2001 Ballon d’Or winner feels United’s signings in past years looked out of place while Jurgen Klopp’s recruitment has not had an effect on the team’s performance.

“It’s very rare that five players play well and five players stink the place out, you normally play well as a team and poorly as a team – it affects everybody.

“Liverpool over the years, no matter who they’ve signed, have been world beaters, then teams like Manchester United over the last 10 years no matter who they’ve signed look like they’ve never played football before.”

After a disappointing start to the campaign for Erik ten Hag’s side, United seem to have found their form. We lost the first two games of the season to Brighton & Hove and Brentford.

However, starting from the North West derby, the Red Devils have gone on a four-game win streak. We did not allow Liverpool to play and were brilliant on the counter. However, in recent campaigns, that has not been the case.

United fans have felt that the club has been mismanaged. While we have spent a lot of money in the transfer market over the years, the team apparently is still lagging behind the top sides.

The Merseysiders, on the other hand, have been shrewd in most of their business. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Alisson, amongst others, have strengthened Liverpool.

However, Ten Hag has evidently changed that this summer. While fans felt that United still overpaid for some of the players, the players that have come in have fit into the manager’s plans instantly.

Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Antony have all made an immediate impact under Ten Hag. All the players look to have seamlessly integrated into the Dutch manager’s plans. Hopefully, the team will continue to build on the success we have found during the recent transfer window.
