Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann wanted regular football as move to Manchester United failed this summer failed

Manchester United had an eye on Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann this summer transfer window. However, a move failed to materialise and the Austrian has no qualms about it.

Bachmann has been with the Hornets since 2017. In the previous campaign, the 28-year-old did not get many opportunities, with Ben Foster preferred in between the sticks. However, with the English shot-stopper gone, the Austrian has been a regular in the Championship.

Speaking about interest from United via Manchester Evening News, Bachmann reveals he had no desire to sit on the bench. The Austrian claims he would have fought for his place as the number one. However, the 28-year-old is satisfied to have stayed on with Watford.

“I would not have gone to Manchester United just to sit on the bench. I would have come to training every day and tried to convince the coach to let me play. That’s very clear.

“Still, I’m glad it turned out the way it did for me. I just want to play football, that’s what I live for.”

Bachmann has started every game for the Hornets in the Championship this season. The Hertfordshire-based club have lost just one of their opening eight fixtures so far.

At United, when Dean Henderson left the club, there were only two senior goalkeepers in the squad. The England international left the Red Devils and joined Nottingham Forest on loan.

Erik ten Hag has stuck with David de Gea in goal. The Spaniard got his place back in the starting XI on a regular basis in the previous campaign. The 31-year-old has since not looked back.

While De Gea had a shaky start to the season, he has been able to bounce back quickly. The new gaffer wants the team to play from out the back. However, the Spaniard is not the best with the ball at his feet. However, the 31-year-old is a world-class shot-stopper.

United were successful in getting Martin Dubravka on transfer deadline day from Newcastle United. The Slovak is an experienced Premier League goalkeeper. Ten Hag also has Tom Heaton in his side.

With De Gea having cemented his position in the starting lineup, Bachmann would have evidently found it hard to get minutes. The Spaniard has shown his qualities against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal as United have won four games on the trot in the league.
