Leeds United vs Manchester United postponed due to security concerns ahead of Queen’s funeral

Manchester United have had another Premier League fixture postponed as Leeds United will no longer visit Old Trafford on 18 September. There are security concerns around the shortage of police personnel.

English football’s top tier already saw the previous matchday be rescheduled in order to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September. While PL football is set to resume this weekend, some fixtures have been tabled.

In a statement released by Man United (h/t Manchester Evening News), concerns around the Red Devils taking on the Peacocks stem from the fact that the police will be preoccupied ahead of the Queen’s funeral on 19 September.

The game is scheduled to take place in Manchester, which is roughly 200 miles away from London. The games in the capital city were under obvious threat of postponement as the Queen’s state funeral will take place there on Monday.

“Following extensive conversations with the Premier League, Greater Manchester Police and Trafford Council, the decision has been made to postpone Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United, scheduled to take place at Old Trafford at 14:00 BST on Sunday 18 September.

“The club reiterates that the safety and security of our fans is paramount and, after considering all available options, we are supportive of the decision that was made in conjunction with the relevant authorities.”

Man United taking on Leeds has always been a fiery affair. The two teams were involved in ferocious battles before the Peacocks were eventually relegated from English football’s top flight in 2004. They made their way back to the PL after a 16-year absence.

Leeds fans visiting Old Trafford comes under a ‘Category A’ fixture. Therefore, the flaring tempers of the game mean that more than usual policing is required.

Man United already missed their visit to Selhurst Park last weekend. With the international break coming up, our next PL game is scheduled for 2 October against Manchester City.

Supporters last saw the team play in the Europa League against Real Sociedad. La Real beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford, handing the side their first defeat in five matches. We visit Moldova next on 15 September as we face Sheriff Tiraspol in the UEL.

With the World Cup in Qatar commencing in November, teams have had to contend with a congested fixture.
