Christian Eriksen wanted a “step up” and decided to join Manchester United instead of entertaining other options
Manchester United star Christian Eriksen wanted a “step up”, which is why the 30-year-old decided to turn down approaches from other clubs to join the Red Devils.
Eriksen made his way to Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer after a fruitful short spell with Brentford. The Denmark international had been on the sidelines for a while before returning to competitive football.
Speaking to Bold.dk (h/t Manchester Evening News), Eriksen reveals he did not have a shortage of options during the transfer window. However, the 30-year-old feels it was “redemption” to have received an offer from United.

“I had enough options to choose from, but it was all about finding the right one. Of course, Brentford wanted me to stay, but I would say where I am in my career I had the opportunity to step up to what I had dreamed of and hoped for.
“It is one of the biggest clubs in the world. It was a redemption after what had happened earlier, and like proving that you could get an offer from United. It was great. It’s a huge club I’ve joined.”
Eriksen gave everyone a scare after suffering a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 while representing Denmark against Finland last year. The 30-year-old had a defibrillator fitted after the incident.
At that time, the Danish national was contracted to Inter Milan. However, Serie A does not allow players with defibrillators to take to the pitch. Hence, the 30-year-old ended up leaving the Italian giants and joined Brentford on a short-term deal in January.
Eriksen featured 11 times for the Bees, scoring one goal and providing four assists. The attacking midfielder played in a deeper role for Thomas Frank’s side and thrived.
Erik ten Hag has deployed Eriksen in a similar role now at United. While the Danish national made his debut for the Red Devils playing as a centre-forward, the 30-year-old has quickly thrived in the number eight position.
Eriksen has started every game for the new gaffer in the 2022/23 campaign. The 30-year-old has quickly become an integral part of the team and has brought creativity to the side.
