Club News: Emmanuel Petit believes Christian Eriksen should be the captain of Manchester United
According to former Arsenal star, Emmanuel Petit, Christian Eriksen should be the captain of Manchester United.
Currently, Harry Maguire is the captain but the centre-back has found game time hard to come by, courtesy of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
Bruno Fernandes has been wearing the captain armband in the absence of Maguire. However, Petit believes that the Portuguese midfielder does not have the necessary qualities to lead the club.
In his opinion Eriksen should be the one wearing the armband and while speaking to Lord Ping (h/t Manchester Evening News), the former Arsenal midfielder gave his opinion.
“The one player that should receive the Manchester United captaincy is Christian Eriksen. He has the personality and the character and he always gives the best version of himself on the pitch.”
He ruled out Varane as an option because the former player considers the French defender to be ‘very shy’. He also believes that the French defender does not have the temper nor the personality to lead the Red Devils.
There have been calls to replace Maguire permanently as captain for some time now. And one would think it is only right to do so. The player has failed to perform in his role as a centre-back at the club and it does not make sense to bench the captain every other week.
A captain should be someone who plays every match and gives it all. Eriksen would make a perfect fit for that role as since his arrival the Dane has rekindled the United midfield. One may even say that Lisandro Martinez could be considered as a candidate for this role.
It remains to be seen if Maguire can make a comeback to the team, though it seems highly unlikely as long as Martinez and Varane are fit and keep producing the goods. Fans will hope that no matter who wears the captain band, they will be worth it.

It was a brave call from Ten Hag to bench Maguire and it won’t be a shock if a new club captain is announced in the near future – although there have been no such blatant indications of that happening as of now.
