Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong still being monitored by Manchester United after summer disappointment

Journalist Pete O’Rourke is confident that Manchester United are still keeping tabs on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Red Devils were left disappointed during the transfer window as they failed to get a deal for the 25-year-old over the line.

United had agreed a deal with the Catalan giants for the transfer of De Jong. However, in the end, the Red Devils failed to capture the Holland international’s signature.

While a move did not end up materialising this summer, O’ Rourke, speaking to GiveMeSport (h/t Manchester Evening News), is assured that United are still monitoring their number one target after their setback during the transfer window.

“I’m sure Manchester United are continuing to monitor the Frenkie de Jong situation at Barcelona. It, obviously, was a blow for United not to be able to get that deal over the line because he was their number one target.”

United were seemingly looking to bolster their midfield options this summer. The Old Trafford side saw a lot of departure from the middle of the park.

One of the players that left the club at the end of last season was Paul Pogba. The France international was the one who brought flair to the engine room. With the 29-year-old’s departure, the side lost a quality number eight.

Nemanja Matic also left Manchester. The Serbian had been an essential part of keeping the midfield solid over the years. His defensive contribution helped keep the team robust.

United ended up bringing two fresh faces for the middle of the park during the transfer window. Christian Eriksen arrived on a free transfer. The Danish national has been deployed in the box-to-box role by Erik ten Hag. And the 30-year-old has thrived.

We also bolstered the engine room by signing Casemiro from Real Madrid. The Brazilian is known for his ability to sweep up threats in the midfield.
