Ajax wunderkind Amourricho van Axel Dongen hints at possible reunion with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Amourricho van Axel Dongen has hinted at a reunion with former Ajax and current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. The 17-year-old plays as a forward for the Amsterdam-based club’s youth side.

Van Axel Dongen made his debut last season under Ten Hag. The winger played a few minutes in the cup and league games before an injury sidelined him for the campaign.

Speaking to Voetbal Zone (h/t Mirror), Van Axel Dongen expressed appreciation for the Dutch manager for handing the 17-year-old his first minutes for the senior side. The youngster also hinted at playing under Ten Hag once again.

“I will remain eternally grateful to him for giving me the opportunity as a young player to play football with players like Antony and Dusan Tadic.”

“I think it’s great to see that things are going a bit better with Manchester United; I really wish him that. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to speak to him since his transfer to United, but who knows, our paths may cross in the future.”

Van Axel Dongen one for the future

In 38 appearances for Eredivisie club’s youth and senior sides in all competitions, Van Axel Dongen has scored 16 goals and provided five assists. The 17-year-old also won the award for the biggest talent in Ajax’s youth academy last year.

Van Axel Dongen has a year left on his contract at the Amsterdam-based club. Considering his talent, it remains to be seen whether United will make a move for the 17-year-old in the future.

The Red Devils have their own bunch of youngsters thriving in the academy. Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage were the standout stars of United’s pre-season tour to Asia and Australia. The Iraqi national was the one who caught most fans’ eyes.

Charlie McNeill is another prospect who recently made his debut for the senior side. The 19-year-old came on as a substitute in the Europa League game against Real Sociedad.

United already have a number of academy products thriving in the squad. Marcus Rashford made his way through the youth ranks and is now an established star at the club. Anthony Elanga is another forward who broke out in the 2021/22 campaign.

Van Axel Dongen has his whole future ahead of him at the moment. It will be interesting to follow the youngster’s development and see if the 17-year-old is able to make a name for himself in world football.
