Danny Murphy commends Scott McTominay for keeping Casemiro out of the Manchester United starting XI

Manchester United star Scott McTominay has started over Casemiro in the defensive midfield position in the last few weeks. And former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has commended the Scotland international for his performances.

McTominay has come up through the youth ranks at United. Over the years, the 25-year-old has grown in influence in the squad. The Scottish national has become a regular with time.

Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Express), Murphy, who spent eight years in Merseyside, lauded McTominay for his performances in the last few games. The 25-year-old has been solid for the Red Devils, playing in the number six position.

“In the last few games he’s kept Casemiro out of the team.

“I know it’s a winning run so he’s keeping the team the same, but I think he’s been outstanding. His desire to get back into defensive positions and help his defence, the amount of crosses he heads out, the amount of blocks he makes and the amount of runners he tracks, talk about doing a job for the team.”

McTominay has, over the years, had inconsistent displays for United. The Scotland international has looked good one moment, while the next he falters. Thus, fans have not been convinced of the midfielder’s quality.

In the previous campaign, McTominay started alongside Fred. The two played in the double pivot, with the Scotland international remaining a bit deeper. The 25-year-old featured 37 times for the Red Devils last season.

United supporters fans were calling for additional reinforcements in the middle of the park this summer. And the Old Trafford side got Christian Eriksen and Casemiro before the end of the transfer window.

McTominay’s campaign under Erik ten Hag got off to a bad start under Erik ten Hag. However, the Red Devils have won four games in a row against some tough oppositions. And the Scotland international has been solid as well.

Since the Liverpool game, McTominay has not looked back. The 25-year-old has taken his chances with both hands.

It remains to be seen whether McTominay is able to keep up his form for the remainder of the season and keep Casemiro out of the starting lineup.
