PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo expresses disappointment as Manchester United drop interest
Manchester United have cooled off their interest in Cody Gakpo and the PSV Eindhoven star is disappointed, according to Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett via Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Holland international is keen on a move to the Premier League. Southampton have put in a bid for the 23-year-old. However, the Eredivisie outfit are holding out for £25 million.
United decided to focus on the signature of Antony from Ajax. As such, the Red Devils withdrew from signing Gakpo. And the 23-year-old wasn’t happy about the situation.
Erik ten Hag seemingly wanted to bolster his attacking options. The club have been left in a dilemma with the current forward options in the squad.
Cristiano is evidently angling for a move away from United. The 37-year-old ended the previous campaign as our leading goalscorer. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner led the line when other options up front failed to make an impact.
However, the new season under Ten Hag has seen Ronaldo relegated to the bench mostly. Even though the Portugal international has featured in every match, he has started just one game as of yet and has not gotten on the scoresheet.
After a disappointing start against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, we’ve bounced back a little with wins over Liverpool and Southampton. However, United’s attacking play has still lacked penetration and creativity.
The Red Devils officially announced the arrival of Antony for big money. The Brazilian played under Ten Hag for two seasons at Ajax. The 22-year-old was brilliant in the Eredivisie.

However, one can’t help but wonder why United did not consider instead focusing on Gakpo, who is available for a fraction of what we paid for Antony. We could have saved money and focused on strengthening other areas as well during this transfer window.
