Speaking on his exclusive Caught Offside column, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United have contacted the agents of Memphis Depay, who is most likely on his way out from FC Barcelona.

Manchester United signed Memphis Depay amidst a great season with Dutch side PSV and there was lots of excitement at the time. However, his spell at United was average where he made 53 appearances and scored seven goals while notching up six assists.

He was shipped out to Lyon where the player saw an amazing spell of form and was back to his best again. A subsequential move to Barcelona did not work out for the player and with the recent signing of Robert Lewandowski, the Spanish club are keen to offload the Dutch International.

Memphis was extremely close to joining Italian Giants Juventus however a deal broke down in the end stages and this presents an opportunity for other clubs to make a move for the player, given the relatively low price that would be required to acquire his services.

With the future of Cristiano Ronaldo in doubt and persistent injury concerns to Anthony Martial, there are still question marks about who can lead the team from the front for this season.

Memphis Depay might provide a cheap alternative who would himself be looking to prove a point and change his past fortunes with the club.

At the same time for Memphis, it would give him an opportunity to get more regular minutes ahead of the World Cup, something that would be tough to get at Barcelona.

More Manchester United News:

The transfer will be reminiscent of the first team he played for at Old Trafford, with a new Dutch manager looking to make his mark. Maybe Erik Ten Hag has the capacity to turn over the player’s failed first spell with the Red Devils.

It is certainly going to be an interesting end to our transfer window business with United expected to be busy working on deals until the window closes.
