Manchester United to pursue Cody Gakpo only if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves

According to the Independent (h/t Express), Manchester United will likely pursue the signing of Cody Gakpo only if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the club this transfer window.

The Red Devils are in the market to bolster the forward line. In the event last season’s top goalscorer were to leave United, the club would likely turn their attention to bringing the PSV Eindhoven star to Manchester.

However, the Dutch side are waiting until the Champions League qualification match against Rangers to make a decision about Gakpo’s future. Although Erik ten Hag has been adamant about the Portuguese being in his plans, Ronaldo’s future is still uncertain at the club.

The 37-year-old has started only one of the three games United have played in the Premier League this season. The Portuguese missed most of the pre-season under the new manager.

Subsequently, Ronaldo was on the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion for Ten Hag’s first competitive fixture in the Old Trafford dugout. With the side down by two goals in the opening half, the Portuguese was substituted in early during the second half. We lost 2-1 to the Seagulls.

Ronaldo was back in the XI when United visited the Gtech Community Stadium. However, we conceded four goals in 35 minutes. The Red Devils ended up losing 4-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped against Liverpool by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

With an abysmal start to the campaign, Ten Hag made some big decisions against Liverpool. The 37-year-old dropped back to the bench.

The Portuguese came one in the 86th minute as United were defending the lead. We won 2-1 against the Merseysiders with goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo is still at the club at the end of the transfer window. Gakpo is a decent option to bring into the squad in case the Portuguese leaves.
