Manchester United earn first win of the season with an outstanding performance against Liverpool

Manchester United earned a well-deserved 2-1 win over Liverpool providing them with the first win of the season. It was a huge performance considering the results of the previous two games and a win against Liverpool will do their confidence a world of good going forward.

Erik Ten Hag was bold with his squad selection and named Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw on the bench and was rightly paid off for his decision. Ten Hag also showed his in-game management skills with crucial substitutions.

David De Gea – 7

Had an absolute shocker against Brentford but put forward a great showing today making some crucial saves. Unlucky for the conceded goal and commanded the box really well.

Diogo Dalot – 8

The Portuguese had a great game keeping Luis Diaz quiet for most of the game and defended with passion and aggression. Seems like the first choice right-back under Erik Ten Hag.

Raphael Varane – 8

Raphael Varane delivered a huge performance on his return to the starting line-up. The Frenchman dealt with Liverpool’s attack tremendously, winning all his duels and was efficient with his play from the back. Clearly should be the first-choice defender in the current United squad.

Lisandro Martinez – 9

New signing Lisandro Martinez had a monstrous game against Liverpool and defended with tenacity and aggression, something we have been missing for a long time. Looked way more settled than the first two games. Varane and Martinez definitely seem like the best defensive pair at the moment.

Tyrell Malacia – 8

Tyrell Malacia was highly impressive in his first start and put on a brilliant performance. He had the best forward in the league locked for most of the game and was impressive with his forward runs. Looks suited to the Premier League.

Scott Mctominay – 7

Scott Mctominay had a very decent game as the lone-holding midfielder and provided a lot of energy to the midfield. With the signing of Casemiro, he had to deliver a strong performance and he definitely did.

Christian Eriksen – 7

Christian Eriksen was again deployed in a pivot and had a much better performance than Brentford. He pressed very well in defending the Liverpool attack and was instrumental with his vision in the first goal.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

Given the armband for the important fixture, Bruno Fernandes led from the front and showed high intensity throughout the game. Made one big chance for Elanga which should have been converted.

Anthony Elanga – 6

Nothing notable but was diligent when tracking back and had intensity in his forward runs. Also provided the assist for the first goal. Hooked at half-time for Anthony Martial

Marcus Rashford – 9

Marcus Rashford was the best performer on the pitch and on another day could have had a hat-trick. Instrumental in making the runs behind and deservedly got his goal with a neat finish. Hopefully, he gets the confidence to produce such performances on a regular basis.

Jadon Sancho – 8

Jadon Sancho had Old Trafford on its feet with his composed finish giving United the perfect start. Outside the goal, he was really impressive with his vision and off-the-ball pressing. Showed glimpses of the reason why United were adamant about acquiring his signature.

Substitutes:

Anthony Martial – 8

Anthony Martial entered the game in the second half and instantly showed the spark that was missing in the first two games. He was constantly pressing the opposition and played a huge part with the assist for the second goal. When fit, he is easily the first-choice striker option under Ten Hag.

Fred – 6

Provided tenacity to the midfield which was getting tired with the intense tempo and Fred came on in the match and showed amazing energy to defend the lead. We can definitely see Fred playing a bigger role under Ten Hag, especially with his Brazilian teammate now announced as a Red Devil

Cristiano Ronaldo – 5

Ronaldo entered the game during the last stages and had one volley skyed off.
