United have been going after De Jong for some time now. The Red Devils even had terms agreed with the Catalan giants for the Dutch midfielder’s signature. However, the 25-year-old isn’t keen on leaving Barcelona.

Erik ten Hag has been after his former Ajax star since he stepped foot into the Old Trafford dugout. And now, the Dutch manager has been given extra funds to secure some more signings this summer.

Chelsea have also been linked with De Jong. The Blues can offer the midfielder Champions League football this season. United need to fend off competition from the Stamford Bridge side to have a chance at signing the 25-year-old.

Also, the Manchester-based club’s previous offer to the La Liga outfit for De Jong has seemingly expired. United have to agree to terms with Barcelona once again for the Holland international.

United need more quality in the middle

The Red Devils have gotten off to an abysmal start in the 2022/23 campaign. This is United’s worst ever start in the league for 101 years. We’ve lost the first two games in the Premier League and sit in the bottom three of the table.

Ten Hag’s opening competitive game in charge of United was disappointing. The Red Devils conceded two goals in the opening 45 minutes against Brighton & Hove Albion. We failed to get a positive result as the game ended 2-1.

United were then stung by Brentdford. The Bees scored four goals past David de Gea in the first half. Supporters have blamed the lack of quality in the middle of the park as one of the reasons for our horrendous start.

Thus, a quality midfielder can go a long way in improving the squad. However, the De Jong saga has dragged on for some time now. United should instead focus on an alternative with the transfer window nearing its end.
