Ajax reject £67.6million bid from Manchester United for Brazilian forward Antony
Manchester United have had a £67.6 million bid for Ajax forward Antony rejected, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required). The Red Devils’ latest push for the South American has fallen short.
United have been chasing Antony all summer. Erik ten Hag is looking to reunite with the Ajax star in Manchester. However, the Old Trafford side now feel it’s difficult to make a move happen with another offer being rejected by the Eredivisie champions.
The Amsterdam-based club are unwilling to part ways with Antony. The Brazil international has been a vital player for de Godenzonen since his move in 2020. And the Red Devils have reservations about negotiating any further.
United have already signed Lisandro Martinez from Ajax this transfer window. The Red Devils were successful in prising away the Argentine from the Dutch outfit.
Ten Hag has been provided with two other signings apart from Martinez. Tyrell Malacia is another player United signed from the Eredivisie. Christian Eriksen also joined the club on a free transfer.
However, the Manchester-based club evidently lack strength in depth in the attack. The side have Alexis Mac Allister’s own goal to show for from the opening two games under the new manager.
Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the few players up front in the previous campaign to contribute to a considerable amount of goals. Bruno Fernandes was second behind his Portuguese compatriot. However, the rest of the attack barely had an impact.
United lacked creativity and penetration last season. And the same issues have returned for the start of the 2022/23 campaign. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have put in poor performances.

Antony knows Ten Hag’s system well. The Brazilian thrived under the Dutch manager in Amsterdam. United should keep pushing for the 22-year-old’s signature.
