Transfer News: Manchester United have joined the race for Pierre Emerick Aubamayeng
According to popular Spanish journalist Gerard Romero (via United Stand) [h/t Manchester Evening News], Manchester United have joined the race to sign Barcelona striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang this summer with Chelsea also in the race.
In a rather surprising turn of events, the Gabonese veteran striker has been heavily linked with a move back to the Premier League. It has not been long since Aubameyang left the English league to play football in Spain.
Aubameyang had been one of Arsenal’s best players for many seasons but things turned sour eventually. The Gabonese striker fell out with Mikel Arteta and had a forgettable first half of the campaign last season.
It became evident that he had no future at the Emirates stadium and the club terminated his contract. Aubameyang eventually joined Barcelona on a free transfer on deadline day in January and the move has been a masterstroke.
Aubameyang and Barcelona seemed like a match made in heaven. The player needed regular game time and he got just that at the Spanish club whereas the La Liga giants were desperate for a striker following the premature retirement of Sergio Aguero.
The Gabonese striker became Barca’s main outlet for goals and was one of the main reasons that the club secured Champions League football as easily as they did eventually. The 33-year-old became a mainstay in Xavi’s team.
Chelsea have emerged as potential suitors for the player with the Blues keen on signing the Barcelona man. However, there could be a late twist in the tale with Man United also interested in the former Dortmund man.
Man United’s pursuit of a striker is understandable. Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club is far from certain and Antony Martial despite an impressive pre-season has suffered an injury and missed the beginning of the season.
