Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer being considered by Manchester United for the backup role
Manchester United are interested in bringing Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer to Old Trafford this summer to serve as the backup, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.
The 33-year-old is one of the three shot-stoppers being considered by the Red Devils. Other Premier League clubs have an eye on the Switzerland international.
However, striking a deal with the player and Gladbach may be tricky. Sommer has a contract on the table to extend his stay with the Bundesliga outfit. Die Fohlen are offering the 33-year-old a deal until 2025. Thus, there’s a possibility that the Swiss will stay in Germany.
United let go of Dean Henderson this summer. The 25-year-old joined Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan. A couple of years back, fans thought that the England international would be the one to succeed David de Gea in between the sticks.
After an impressive loan spell with Sheffield United, Henderson returned to Old Trafford for the 2020/21 campaign. The 25-year-old shared game time in between the sticks with our Spanish star.
De Gea’s performances at that moment weren’t consistent. And Henderson looked set to pip the 31-year-old to a regular starting berth. However, the 2021/22 season saw the 25-year-old get limited opportunities.

Henderson rarely got a chance to play. De Gea was back to his best in the previous campaign. Thus, with the England international gone, Erik ten Hag has to rely on Tom Heaton as the backup for now.

Sommer is in his ninth season with Gladbach. The 33-year-old has been a key member of the Bundesliga outfit since joining the club back in 2014.
De Gea has made a couple of errors in the opening games of the campaign. The 31-year-old isn’t the best with the ball at his feet. Ten Hag’s teams are known to play out from the back. If the Spaniard falters or gets injured, a player like Sommer has the quality to step in the United goal.
