Tyrell Malacia hints for more game time at Manchester United after coming on as second-half substitute in Brentford loss
Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia has sent a strong message to Erik ten Hag, hinting at wanting more game time. The Dutch national came on as a second-half substitute in the loss against Brentford.
Malacia was signed by the Red Devils from PSV Eindhoven this summer. The 22-year-old was considered a great prospect back in his home country.
But the Holland international hasn’t started a competitive game yet for United under Ten Hag. The 22-year-old featured for the final few minutes in the new manager’s first competitive game and played 45 minutes against the Bees.
The Manchester-based club lost to Brighton & Hove Albion in the first game of the 2022/23 campaign. Things got worse against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium as United conceded four goals in the first half.
Speaking to Viaplay (h/t Manchester Evening News), when asked why he was brought on at half-time, Malacia wasn’t keen on answering. But the 22-year-old made his opinions known about being on the bench.
“You have to ask the trainer about that. It’s something between me and the trainer, we discuss that together. I’m fit. I don’t come here to sit on the bench. I always want to play, of course. When my time comes, I will definitely be there.”
Luke Shaw’s performances in the two games have made a case for Malacia to start the next game. The England international hasn’t looked his best. Brentford had an easy time playing against our backline.
The opening two goals came from errors by David de Gea. The Bees then stung us with a goal from a corner. They scored another one with a brilliant counterattack. Fans felt Shaw could’ve done better in the sequence leading up to the fourth goal.
Ten Hag made three changes at half-time. Raphael Varane, Scott McTominay and Malacia came on for Lisandro Martinez, Fred and Shaw, respectively.
