According to The Athletic via UtdDistrict on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is open to letting Cristiano Ronaldo leave this transfer window.

The 37-year-old has evidently wanted a move away all summer. The Dutch manager is willing to part ways with the Portuguese, provided the Red Devils bolster the forward line.

Initially, the club wanted Ronaldo to stay after his much-awaited homecoming. Ten Hag was adamant about keeping the number seven in the squad. But things seem to have changed now.

Ronaldo came back to the club where he made a name for himself last summer. The Portuguese left Old Trafford in 2009 for Real Madrid. The 2021/22 campaign saw him gracing the red shirt once again.

However, it hasn’t been a sweet welcome home. United were disappointing in the previous season. The side failed to make it to the top four and missed out on Champions League football for the 2022/23 campaign.

Ronaldo finished last season as our highest goalscorer. He lived up to fans’ expectations. But the 37-year-old was only one of the few players to perform well. The supporting cast in the squad didn’t have the best of seasons.

The 37-year-old missed most of the pre-season under Ten Hag. The Portuguese played only one friendly against Rayo Vallecano but didn’t appear to be match fit.

The new manager’s first competitive game against Brighton & Hove Albion saw Ronaldo named on the bench. With Anthony Martial sidelined, Christian Eriksen was preferred as a centre-forward. The Portuguese started the second Premier League game against Brentford, but United lost 4-0.

If Ten Hag decides to let Ronaldo leave, it’s going to be challenging for the Red Devils to find a player capable of replacing the 37-year-old’s contribution to the side.
