Club News: Paul Merson believes Manchester United should have signed Conor Coady

Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson criticised Manchester United’s transfer policy and said that the Red Devils should have signed Conor Coady from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to the former Arsenal playmaker, Coady would have helped to cover up the shortcomings of Harry Maguire. The Manchester side was battered during their last game against Brentford where they lost 4-0.

They should have been going for Conor Coady, they need to play three at the back! Maguire, I don’t want to keep going on, but Maguire can’t run. You need to play a five at the back.

But his advice will come a bit late as Coady has joined Everton on a season-long loan. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain left his side after a seven-year stint with them.

This United side has got off to the worst possible start, losing both their games. Erik ten Hag’s side have let in six goals in two games and sit at the bottom of the league table.

Coady would have made a decent signing to this United side. The 29-year-old has been an integral part of the Wolves side since joining them in 2015. A proven Premier League centre-back, United could have done with his experience at the back.

Maguire and Lisandro Martinz are not good enough to start for the club, with the latter displaying one of the worst 45 minutes of defending during their last game. Coady started all 38 league games for Wolves last season, scoring four goals in that process.

But nothing can happen now as Coady has joined another club this summer. Ten Hag has the task of fixing his backline in very limited time. The players are in desperate need to change their game attitude, or it could be a very long season for them and their fans.

United will hope that they can at least offer some competition when they take on Liverpool in their next game. With Martinez having a very bad last game, it is likely that Raphael Varane will start against Liverpool.
