Frenkie de Jong offensive launched as Manchester United look to pip Chelsea to the signing of Barcelona superstar
According to Ferran Martinez via Managing Barca on Twitter (h/t football.london), Manchester United are confident of wrapping up the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga by next week as the Red Devils launch an offensive for the Barcelona superstar.
United have seemingly been after the Dutch midfielder all summer. And now the Red Devils look to up the ante to pip Chelsea to the 25-year-old’s signature.
The Manchester-based club hope to blow the competition out of the water. To that end, the Red Devils are preparing to make the best proposal in terms of money to De Jong as well as Barcelona.
Having pushed for the 25-year-old for so long, it appeared United had lost the opportunity to get the Holland international. But it looks like there’s still hope for Ten Hag to get one of the top targets of this summer.
United fans have been clamouring for more quality in the middle of the park for years now. Fred and Scott McTominay aren’t considered good enough by supporters.
Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata’s departure has left the club short-staffed in the engine room. Thus, the Red Devils need a number six and a number eight.

Christian Eriksen has been the only midfield addition this summer. But the Danish national is more of an attack-minded player. The 30-year-old has played most of his career in the number 10 role.
Ten Hag has deployed Eriksen in the centre of midfield during pre-season. The Denmark international also played as a pivot in the second half against Brighton & Hove Albion. Lisandro Martinez has also played as a defensive midfielder at Ajax.

De Jong is a versatile player as well. Having made a name for himself in the middle of the park, the Dutchman has also played at centre-back for Barcelona. The 25-year-old is decent at both ends of the pitch, and United require someone of his ilk.
