Leeds United set to pip Manchester United to the signing of Ismaila Sarr
According to Foot Mercato (h/t Express), Manchester United are close to losing out on Ismaila Sarr this summer as Leeds United are within reach of an agreement with Watford for the Senegalese international.
The Whites are punching ahead for a deal for the Hornets’ winger. The 24-year-old has been one of the best players for the Hertfordshire-based club since arriving in 2019.
Darren Fletcher visited the Hawthorns when Watford faced West Bromwich Albion recently. United’s technical director was supposedly keeping an eye on Sarr at the game.
Some would say the Red Devils are currently in a bit of a crisis when it comes to the forward line. Erik ten Hag started Christian Eriksen in the centre-forward position against Brighton & Hove Albion. The Dutch manager was without Anthony Martial for the first game of the Premier League season.
Adding depth to the United attack
Cristiano Ronaldo ended the previous campaign as the Manchester-based club’s highest goalscorer. The Portuguese was the only attacker in the squad who managed to make a difference.
But the 37-year-old’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain. Ronaldo missed most of the pre-season under Ten Hag. As a result, the Portugal international started on the bench against the Seagulls. It remains to be seen whether he stays for the 2022/23 campaign.
Sarr has started off Watford’s Championship campaign in red-hot form. The Senegalese has scored one goal and made one assist in two games this season. However, some fans feel he’s too good a player to be playing in English football’s second tier.
United could do with a player like Sarr in the squad. The 24-year-old is a versatile forward capable of playing in various positions in the attack. Although primarily the Senegalese has been deployed as a right winger, the former Stade Rennais star is also capable of playing as a centre-forward.

If Sarr’s added to the United squad, it would also mean extra competition for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. The two have been underwhelming for some time now. New additions are needed to spur up some of our players.
