Frenkie de Jong will have to decide future as Chelsea and Manchester United both strike agreement with Barcelona
Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong has a big decision to make as the transfer window nears its end. Chelsea are willing to meet the demands set by Barcelona for the Dutch midfielder.
Now, it’s up to the 25-year-old to decide where he wants to play, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano via Caught Offside (h/t Manchester Evening News). The verdict on De Jong’s future rests on his own shoulders.
The Red Devils and the Blues now go head-to-head to convince the Holland international to join their respective clubs. But it won’t be easy as the 25-year-old can also decide to stay where he is at the moment.
United will still try to lure De Jong. Erik ten Hag has wanted the Dutch midfielder since arriving in the Old Trafford dugout. The two have been together formerly at Ajax. On the other hand, Chelsea boast Champions League football this season.
United have lost depth in midfield
The Manchester-based club is evidently desperate to add to its midfield ranks. After the weekend’s defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, a lot of people pointed fingers at United’s midfield.
Fred and Scott McTominay started the first game of the new campaign at Old Trafford. The duo did not have the best of games and came in under their fair share of stick from fans.
The Red Devils have lost a lot of strength in the middle of the park over the course of this summer. Paul Pogba was possibly one of the most technically gifted players in the United squad. The Frenchman joined Juventus on a free transfer this summer.
There have also been other departures. Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata ended their stay in Manchester. We’ve only gotten in one midfielder this transfer window as of now with the addition of Christian Eriksen.
