Manchester United defender Eric Bailly turns down move to Roma in favour of Sevilla switch

Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly is set to snub Roma and Jose Mourinho and instead move to Sevilla this summer, according to The Sun (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Ivorian had a chance to move to Serie A and reunite with the Portuguese gaffer. But it seems the 28-year-old wants to move back to Spain and has decided on the Andalusians.

Bailly moved to Manchester from Villarreal in the summer of 2016. The Ivory Coast international had two impressive seasons with the Yellow Submarine before United decided to go after his signature.

But since Bailly’s move to the Red Devils, injuries have been an issue for him. In the 28-year-old’s six seasons in Manchester, the centre-back has featured 113 times.

United currently have a host of options for the centre-back role in the squad. Erik ten Hag can choose from Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and other fringe players.

Our defensive record wasn’t the best last season. We conceded 57 goals in the Premier League last season. The Red Devils ended the campaign with a goal difference of zero.

Maguire, Lindelof and Varane shared game time and made some glaring errors throughout the season. Ten Hag has brought in Martinez, a defender he trusted at Ajax.

The Dutch manager has his work cut out for the upcoming campaign. But, hopefully, the new additions to the defensive line will improve our performances.

Bailly is a decent defender whenever he’s played for us. But an injury at an inopportune moment derails the Ivorian’s run. Securing a place in the XI looks challenging for next season. A move away is his best bet to get more time on the pitch.
