AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell believes Manchester United need consistency in the managerial role

AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell believes Manchester United need to stick with their manager for longer to have a chance of success once again.

The Red Devils have had uncertainty in the dugout over the years. There seems to have been no direction with managers that have been hired.

Mitchell, who has been linked with United over the years, believes the club must stick with a manager and a project over time. While speaking to Sky Sports, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton recruiter said:

“We are a long time from the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Erik ten Hag is a top coach from Ajax but they need a top blueprint not only for now but for the next five years, and work towards that, and sometimes on that journey there are hard moments when you don’t get the right results, even though you’re doing the right things.

United have been trigger-happy over the years, sacking a manager in the middle of the season. It happened with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho.

David Moyes came to Manchester and was immediately under fire. He didn’t even last one full season. But now at West Ham, the 59-year-old has shown that he’s a decent manager.

Louis van Gaal, under whom we looked like we were building something special, was sacked after two seasons. We haven’t allowed managers to settle in and build their sides.

“You have to know that, over that period, the consistency of the decision-making will yield a good end result. I think we’ve seen that both Manchester City and Liverpool, that when you adopt that long-term strategy you can get real consistency and sustainable success.”

Stability is critical in any institute, especially football. It took Sir Alex Ferguson four seasons at United to win his first trophy. Since his departure, we haven’t given managers enough time to stamp their authority on the side.

Mitchell, who made a name for himself under Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig, understands how much uniformity counts at a club.

“I think that’s the biggest thing for Manchester United; putting down their identity of what they want to be today, but most crucially what they want to be in five years’ time, and where they want to be, and what they want to look like; from everything from young players, to the style of play, to the whole culture peace in Manchester United.”

Manchester City and Liverpool today are one of the strongest teams in world football. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola didn’t have instant success. They were given time to impose their system and bring in the personnel they wanted.

To be one of the best teams in the world once again, we need to put faith in Ten Hag and allow him the time and players necessary.
