Transfer News: Rival club make contact with Manchester United target and Ajax star Antony
An unnamed rival club have stepped into the race for Ajax forward Antony, according to Jonathan Shrager (h/t Express). Manchester United have been in talks for the Brazilian for a while now.
Erik ten Hag knows the player very well. The new gaffer in the Old Trafford dugout is supposedly desperate to reunite with the 22-year-old.
Antony played a big part in Ten Hag’s plans over the last two seasons in Amsterdam. The South American dazzled the Eredivisie. Now, it is claimed that the Dutch champions could want as much as £84 million for the Brazil international.
United need more quality after last season’s disappointing showing in front of goal. Only Cristiano Ronaldo lived up to the mark, while the rest of our attackers failed to make any sort of significant impact.
People had high hopes for Jadon Sancho as he returned to England after a mesmerising spell in Germany. His move from Borussia Dortmund was met with a lot of fanfare. But the 22-year-old failed to replicate his Bundesliga exploits in the Premier League.
While Sancho’s debut season was a letdown, Marcus Rashford couldn’t get going after the Euro 2020 disappointment. The 24-year-old barely contributed to United’s play last season. The England international failed to lead our line as he has in past seasons.
Anthony Martial rarely started games for the Red Devils in the first half of the previous campaign. The Frenchman left for Sevilla on loan in January after failing to make a mark in Manchester.
But pre-season has been a blessing for our attackers. United have looked sharp in front of goal. Those who seemed out of sorts last season have looked bright in the friendlies under Ten Hag.

While it’s encouraging, we can’t go into the upcoming campaign without any reinforcements. It remains to be seen how our forwards react throughout the campaign. Bringing in a player like Antony would only strengthen the depth of our squad.
