Dean Jones: Frenkie de Jong could join Manchester United on loan from Barcelona this summer
Journalist Dean Jones has suggested that Frenkie de Jong could join Manchester United on loan from Barcelona before the end of the transfer window. The Catalans still owe the Dutch national part of his salary.
De Jong joined Barcelona in 2019 from Ajax after impressing in the Netherlands. The 25-year-old has put in a decent shift for the Blaugrana. But the Spanish giants are looking to move the Dutchman on.
Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport (h/t Express), has suggested that United could wait out till the end of the summer window and then make an offer to Barcelona to take De Jong on loan in light of their financial issues.
“I think they would take de Jong even if it came down to deadline day.
“We might even get to the stage where they will begin to look at whether they can take him on loan to give Barcelona time to figure out a way to sort out his wages.”
The Covid-19 pandemic forced many clubs to ask players for a salary reduction; the Spanish giants were one of them. Now, the Catalans owe the 25-year-old a significant amount in deferred wages.
It’s a stumbling block in any move for De Jong as Barcelona are seemingly unwilling to pay the full amount to the Dutch national.
A loan move though seems unlikely. Chelsea are another club in the race for the 25-year-old. And while the Red Devils don’t boast Champions League football next season, the Blues do. But De Jong did play under Erik ten Hag at Ajax previously.
United’s current first-team midfield options include the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen. Youngsters like James Garner, Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage will also have something to say about their place in the squad.
But De Jong is a talent that not many teams have in their side. The Reds Devils can solve the problem of a lack of quality in the pivot position if they sign the Dutch midfielder.
