Chris Armas gives an indication of why Fred is a regular for Manchester United under every manager

Former Manchester United assistant coach Chris Armas has seemingly explained why Fred has been the first name on the team sheet for many managers in the Old Trafford dugout.

The appointment of Ralf Rangnick last season saw some other new faces at United. Armas was one of the people the German added to his backroom staff.

Speaking to The Crack Podcast (h/t Manchester Evening News), the former assistant coach of the Red Devils gave an insight into Fred as a person and a player. Armas called the Brazilian a team player and praised his personality.

“If you have a team of Freds, you have a team that’s together and they play for each other.

“If your number’s called, you give everything, if your number is not called, I love you. He [Fred] is a great guy this one, he’s not just a great guy, he’s a good player and he would take some heat in the media, but he was reliable and a good team guy. He loves the team and plays for the team.”

Fred joined United in 2018 from Shakhtar Donetsk. The Brazilian’s first season saw him mostly come off the bench. But since then, the 29-year-old has been a big part of every manager’s plans.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regularly started Fred in his side alongside another player in the pivot role. Later on, the Brazilian formed a partnership with Scott Mctominay in the XI.

Last season, even after Ole was sacked, Rangnick decided to stick with Fred in the side. There were certain moments from the Brazilian last season that caught people’s eyes.

But fans haven’t necessarily been convinced about the 29-year-old’s quality. While he has been a decent player for United, there are still certain areas of the Brazilian’s game that leaves spectators asking for more.

Fred has started all four friendly games that we’ve played under Erik ten Hag. It seems the Dutch manager has also taken a liking to the Brazilian’s willingness.

But we can’t forget that the side finished with its lowest ever points tally in the Premier League last season. So while Fred is a great squad player, we need more quality on the pitch to challenge for titles.
