Manchester United have confirmed the loan move of talented teenage sensation Alvaro Fernandez through their official website, who leaves after signing a contract extension with the club.

The 19-year-old has been predicted to have a successful career after winning United’s Player of the Year title for the reserve squad last season as a result of his performances with the under-23s.

Now the club has confirmed that the defender is leaving for Preston North End of the Championship on a season-long loan. Tottenham Hotspur’s Troy Parrott also made a move to Deepdale earlier this week after extending his contract as well.

Fernandez didn’t make his senior debut with United although he joined the club in 2020 from Real Madrid’s academy. However, he was kept as an unused substitute in the final four Premier League games of the previous campaign as the team slid to a disappointing sixth-place finish under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The under-23 player of the year from the previous campaign will leave the club for the first time, and he’ll probably compete with Robbie Brady, another former Red, for Lowe’s starting left wing-back berth.

Fernandez might make his Championship debut when Preston play Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Tyrell Malacia’s recent arrival has given new manager Erik ten Hag more alternatives at left-back in addition to Luke Shaw, Alex Telles, and Brandon Williams who were already there. Hence, it might have been pretty hard for Fernandez to break into the team if he stayed.

Fernandez should follow in the footsteps of players like James Garner, who shone in the Championship last season. The midfielder was crucial to Nottingham Forest’s play-off promotion to the Premier League. His time there has elevated him in Ten Hag’s eyes as Old Trafford enters a new era.

After gaining some experience, the youngster would hope to play some role in the senior set-up as he will now be a United player until 2024 after signing a new contract extension with the club. It remains to be seen whether he turns his loan into a success.
