Transfer News: Frenkie de Jong could choose Chelsea over Manchester United if forced to leave
According to Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong could choose to move to Chelsea over Manchester United if he is forced to leave by Barcelona this summer.
Manchester United’s interest in Frenkie de Jong has been going on for quite some time now with there being no breakthrough for the Red Devils. Negotiations with the club don’t seem to be the issue but Frenkie does not show any intention of coming here.
Recently, it emerged that Chelsea are also interested in signing the talented Dutchman with the Blues willing to negotiate with Barcelona to take De Jong to Stamford Bridge. However, the player is supposedly keen on staying with Barcelona.
Frenkie de Jong is a world-class midfielder and possesses abilities that are extremely rare to find. We have seen how good he can be during Ajax’s Champions League run in 2018 when De Jong was the heartbeat of the team.
The 25-year-old made the switch from Ajax to Barcelona in 2019 despite interest from other clubs. He has had three rather successful years at the Spanish club but has often tended to divide the Barcelona fan base.
Whilst Barcelona have not offered any hint that De Jong is likely to be sold, with rumours ripe about his future, we still don’t know where the former Ajax man is going to play his football next season as of now.
It has now emerged that if he is forced out by Barcelona, it is highly likely that Frenkie de Jong would prefer a move to Chelsea over Manchester United and the possible reason for this could be the fact that the Blues play the Champions League next season.
This begs the question as to whether Man United are even right in waiting around for Frenkie for so long. It is one thing to not want to move from your current club but choosing another club over Man United could be a blow for Erik ten Hag.
The last thing we want is the repeat of a Paul Pogba situation with a player not necessarily wanting to be at the club and hence not playing their best football. If Frenkie is anything like that, this would be a costly mistake for us.

There are other midfielders in the market that we can look at to reinforce our squad. De Jong is not the be-all and end-all of it, and it is for the best if Man United pull the plug on this deal than get played.
