Transfer News: Manchester United set to return for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
According to Calciomercato (h/t Express), Manchester United are set to return for Lazio midfield ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer after failing to land him in 2019.
Manchester United have been pursuing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona throughout the summer but it is looking increasingly unlikely by the day that the Dutchman will make the switch to Old Trafford this summer.
This will force the Red Devils to look at alternatives to reinforce the midfield region and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is one of the players who Man United can look at as an alternative choice to Frenkie de Jong.
The Serbian midfielder has been one of the best players in Serie A for quite some seasons now and is rather underrated in the rest of Europe. He is extremely talented and has all the skill sets required to succeed at a top club.
The 27-year-old has been with Lazio since 2015 and it seems very surprising that no big club has actually managed to sign the Serbian ever since. Man United came real close in 2019 but failed to close a deal with Lazio.
Milinkovic-Savic had yet another exceptional season with the Italian giants last time around. The 27-year-old midfielder played 47 times for Lazio scoring 11 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions.
The numbers speak for themselves and need no more proof to show that the Serbian is one of the best box-to-box midfielders going around. If he can produce numbers like these in the Premier League, he would become one of the best players in the league almost immediately.
Predominantly a central midfielder, it is easy to see how the Serbian will fit into an Erik ten Hag system. The Dutch tactician has preferred using a 4-2-3-1 during the pre-season alternating with a 4-3-3 and Milinkovic-Savic will fit like a glove into both these systems.

If Man United manage to sign Milinkovic-Savic, then losing out on Frenkie de Jong might not seem like a huge blow. The Serbian seems to make a lot of sense for the Red Devils and let’s hope we get a deal done for him real soon.
