Man United target Memphis Depay likely to turn down a move to Newcastle United

According to the Spanish publication, Sport, Manchester United target Memphis Depay would prefer to snub Newcastle United this summer. The Barcelona ace is a surplus of requirements at the Spanish capital and would be the next player to depart the club.

The Blaugrana are currently stacked in attacking options as they have signed Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha. This leaves the Dutch striker in a very precarious position as the club would aim to ease the pressure off their wage books by letting a few unwanted players leave.

Ever since the player’s transfer news started making rounds, the 28-year-old has been linked to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. However, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are also said to be interested in hiring the Dutch ace.

Depay knows the taste of the Premier League when he played for the Red Devils between 2015-17. However, the Dutch striker’s lacklustre performance didn’t help him win a regular place in the starting XI under Louis van Gaal. The arrival of Jose Mourinho didn’t change things either, and Depay decided to join French giants, Lyon.

His career picked up with the French club and he soon won a ticket to the Camp Nou. The 28-year-old enjoyed a good debut season in Catalunya but is far from assured a spot in the first XI for the 2022/23 campaign.

It was known that Manchester United were leading in the race to sign their former striker. Depay would love to join a club with a proper project and that would be the reason behind him snubbing a move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies received the same fate as Spurs as Depay would be highly unlikely to join both the Premier League clubs. This would be a serious blow for Eddie Howe, who has failed to lure a striker at St. James Park. Newcastle fans have seen the club rise through the ranks since its takeover by the Saudi-based consortium.

However, money doesn’t buy a player’s dreams and it would be the case again with the Magpies as they would lose out on yet another player. Eddie Howe was already left in the dark when Reims striker Hugo Ekitike joined PSG by snubbing a move to the wealthy club.

The Black and Whites had made good progress in the initial days of the transfer window. The club were able to sign long-term target, Sven Botman from Lille while also securing deals for Nick Pope and Matt Targett. However, missing out on Memphis Depay would hit their confidence badly as they continue their search for a top striker.

It remains to be seen whether the Dutch striker would repeat the same decision with United or prefer to join his former club.
