David de Gea insists he’d like to stay at Manchester United for many years
Speaking in an interview as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United superstar David de Gea opens up on future plans with the Spaniard insisting that he’d like to stay in Manchester for many years to come.
One of the best players for Man United last season, David de Gea was one of the main reasons the Red Devils managed to finish where they did. He often bailed them out of the defensive crises with his heroics but they were not sufficient for them to get a Champions League spot.
To say that last season was a comeback for David de Gea would be an understatement. The Spaniard had a couple of dismal seasons before that, even leading to doubts over his future with Dean Henderson replacing him as the number one.
Fortune struck at the right time for de Gea. He returned early for pre-season training last season and as fate may have it, Dean Henderson got injured and later contracted Covid and was unable to start the season for the Red Devils.
This meant that the then Man United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was forced in his hand to play David de Gea at the start of the season and the Spanish international has looked back. He has arguably been one of the best players in the Premier League.
The Spanish shot-stopper played 45 times for the Red Devils last season conceding 66 goals and keeping 10 clean sheets across all competitions. These numbers could have been much worse if not for the 31-year-old’s heroics.
De Gea has a contract with Manchester United until next season with an option to extend it for a further year. Speaking about it, the Spaniard reiterated his desire to stay here
“I didn’t talk with anyone yet but of course, I would be really happy to be here for as long as they want because I want to be here for more years. I’m just thinking about Manchester. It’s my home. I feel very good here. It’s a privilege, it’s an honour to be here in this club it’s one of the best things in my life, to be a part of this club”
A season ago, handing a new deal to David de Gea might have been received with criticism but there is no doubt that the move will be received with a lot of fanfare and Man United must renew the Spaniard beyond this season.

At 31, De Gea is still young in goal-keeper terms and he could still have many years left in a Red Devils shirt if he performs anything like he did last season, there is no reason not to give him a new contract for the future.
