Bruno Fernandes hits out at critics for complaining about his performances for Manchester United last season

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is not happy with the criticism he has received for last season’s performances. The Portuguese feels the critics have been unfair in their assessment.

Having signed in the winter window of the 2019/20 season, Fernandes had an immediate impact at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished third that season.

After misinterpreting a question, the Portuguese sounded off on his critics. Speaking to the press via Manchester Evening News, the 27-year-old spoke about the difficulty of playing as a number 10.

“I keep the ball when I think I have to keep it, I try a pass when I think I have to do it and sometimes it goes good, sometimes wrong. Obviously, when it goes wrong, I know that shouldn’t be the one, but sometimes when you play in the 10 position you have only a few seconds to think and control the ball and make the pass, so it’s not that much time to think.”

In Frenandes’ first full season at United, the Portuguese was the star man of Ole’s side. He featured in 58 games and scored 28 goals and provided 17 assists.

But last season was underwhelming for the player as well as the side. Fernandes looked like a shadow of his former self. The 27-year-old’s performances were below par for most of the campaign.

The responsibility is on Fernandes

Fernandes hit out at naysayers who have found fault in his showings on the pitch for the Red Devils last season. The 27-year-old is of the opinion that his goal tally for the season has skewered people’s perspectives.

“I understand of course, that someone has his own opinion, but when I arrived in 2020 I was losing the same amount of balls in those six months and then the year after I lost the same amount of balls, but I scored 28 goals, so people don’t complain about that. Now last season, because I scored only 10, because for some people it’s only 10 goals, people start complaining.

The Manchester-based side had an abysmal campaign. Ole left the club after the side’s poor showing in the PL and Ralf Rangnick was appointed. Under a new manager, the team was still shocking.

Fernandes, who was our talisman before, had to change his play a bit last season with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 27-year-old’s performances and stats didn’t reflect the expectations fans had from him. But it is up to the Portuguese to be better.

Fernandes is a risk-taking ball player in the middle of the park with the responsibility of opening up opposition defences. Losing the ball is part of the game. But last season, fans noticed the midfielder’s hesitation regarding decision-making in the final third.
