Danny Murphy warns Manchester United newbie Christian Eriksen
According to former Liverpool star Danny Murphy, Christian Eriksen would find it tough to break into Manchester United’s starting XI. The Danish midfielder was snapped up for free after being closely monitored by Erik ten Hag.
The 30-year-old midfielder was a key player for Brentford after he grabbed eyeballs throughout his six-month spell. It was earlier known that the bees were aiming to convince the former Spurs midfielder to sign a new contract.
However, it would be safe to say that Brentford were aware that the Dane star would attract elite clubs since he was a free agent. Manchester United under the guidance of their new manager successfully lured Christian Eriksen into signing a new three-year contract.
The Danish star dazzled while playing in a deep attacking role. It was highlighted by the number of chances he created for his teammates every weekend.
Ten Hag would look to deploy the 30-year-old in a position where he would play with freedom. The Red Devils have Bruno Fernandes who plays in a similar position as that of the Dane and the No.10 position would now be a competing spot for both the players.
The Dutch manager has preferred to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation which means that he has been playing with a single attacking midfielder. Former Premier League player, Danny Murphy believes that Christian Eriksen would have no chance of stealing the spot from Bruno Fernandes.
He feels that the Portuguese would be the undisputed No.10 in the starting XI. According to The Metro he said:
“I think United are only going to play with one No.10. If you think you are going to get Eriksen and Fernandes in a midfield three and be able to compete with the best teams athletically and defensively, you have got no chance.”
Even after facing the competition, Christian Eriksen would have his own share of chances to feature for Manchester United. With the Premier League boasting a five substitution rule, the manager would reshuffle his starting XI in order to accommodate the Danish midfielder.
One key observation that could be made between the two United midfielders is their ability to hold possession. Bruno Fernandes hasn’t been the best while holding the ball, however, his silky smooth attacking play makes up for his shortcomings.
However, Eriksen is known to hold the ball by effectively dictating the play. This would have helped him to create a number of chances for his teammates. However, it would be difficult to play the 30-year-old every weekend due to his age and keeping in mind his health.
