Raphael Varane insists Manchester United need to improve despite defeating Liverpool
Speaking in an interview as quoted by the Independent, Raphael Varane is not resting on his laurels and insists Manchester United need to improve in everything despite the Liverpool drubbing.
Man United emerged 4-0 winners against Liverpool in their first pre-season friendly in Bangkok with goals from Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Fred and Facundo Pellistri helping the Red Devils to a win over their arch-rivals.
It was Erik ten Hag’s first game in charge after taking over the reins at Old Trafford ahead of next season and there were clearly some positives to see in the way Man United played but it is too early to conclude on anything.
Speaking about his side’s performance, Raphael Varane was quick to acknowledge that there was work still to be done and this is just the beginning.
“The manager explained very well what we have to do and it’s absolutely clear. We are happy with the result obviously but we know we have to work very hard still to be ready for the start of the season. I think we know exactly what we have to do – we have to improve in everything”
Varane was right in not going over the top with the result and remaining realistic about the situation. Man United are undoubtedly a work in progress and it will take time for Erik ten Hag’s project to truly take shape.
The French World cup champions joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid only at the beginning of last season. He would be desperate to improve his own performances this season after a largely indifferent first campaign.
Varane struggled during his first season in English football but it was always a possibility given the nature of the English game. We all know that the French centre-back is a world-class defender and he will undoubtedly bounce back next season under Ten Hag.

Injuries did not help Varane last season and this meant that the 29-year-old managed to play only 28 times for the Red Devils the previous campaign scoring one goal and providing one assist across all competitions.
If Man United are to improve and have a better season this time around, it will have to coincide with the renaissance of Varane as well and if yesterday’s performance was anything to go by, both Varane and the Red Devils are on the right track.
