Manchester United chiefs are in Barcelona as the club continues to monitor Frenkie de Jong
According to BBC Sport, John Murtough and Richard Arnold, two executives from Manchester United, are now in Barcelona amid the Red Devil’s persistent interest in Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman appears to be Old Trafford’s top summer target, with Erik ten Hag eager to reconnect with a player he helped develop at Ajax Amsterdam. The red half of Manchester also requires new central midfielders, and they have been working hard this summer to close a move for de Jong.
According to The Mirror, the player has been unwilling to participate in any transfer discussions and appeared to dismiss a move to Old Trafford. But despite the Camp Nou side’s efforts to balance their books, Man United remain hopeful of landing their man.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed whether Man United’s two senior figures, Murtough and Arnold are in Barcelona to attempt and close a deal for the Dutch star. It is believed that they are there to meet with the Catalan team’s executives and have a direct conversation.
One can hope that the situation will become clearer in the coming days, hopefully giving us a shot in the arm in our pursuit of the Dutch international. We have frequently struggled to maintain composure and control in the middle of the field and will now also need to compensate for the departures of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.
That can change with de Jong’s arrival, but we must complete the transfer quickly rather than let it drag on. It is in our best interests to ensure that the deal goes through quickly, enabling the 25-year-old to have a pre-season under his belt.
Indeed, there have been some rumours that de Jong wants to stay at Camp Nou. There are some worries because we still haven’t resolved the player’s perspective. Let’s hope the board can get through the last hurdle during the meeting with Barcelona officials with minimal fuss.
