Transfer News: Barcelona president claims Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong is not for sale

Speaking in an interview as quoted by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona president Frenkie de Jong has revealed that Frenkie de Jong is not for sale amidst interest from Manchester United.

Manchester Evening News recently claimed that Man United hope to have De Jong for their pre-season tour this summer. Just when it looked like they were making progress for the talented midfielder, Laporta’s words offer us a different picture.

Frenkie de Jong at his best is a world-class midfielder who is capable of running a midfield on his own. His talent knows no bounds and as we have seen many times during his career, he can produce moments of brilliance on a consistent basis.

The talented Dutch midfielder has been somewhat of an enigma at Camp Nou during his time with Barcelona. Whilst he puts in great performances, he often gets criticised for not doing enough and putting in performances that match his ability.

Frenkie joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 on the back of what was a stunning campaign for the Eredivisie giants as they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League beating Real Madrid and Juventus along the way.

The 25-year-old midfielder has had a very decent season with Barcelona yet again. The talented midfielder has played 45 games for the Spanish giants scoring four goals and providing five assists across all competitions.

Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are evidently keen on signing the talented Dutchman but we need to see how this situation develops now considering the fact that the Barcelona president insists that de Jong is not for sale.

That said, Manchester United must take Laporta’s words with a pinch of salt and not take it verbatim. Joan Laporta is smart enough to use his words wisely.

It remains to be seen if it is a tactic to put pressure on Manchester United to spend more money for the player they so desperately want. The fact that he mentioned that a salary issue needs to be sorted out shows us that this saga is far from over.

Despite all this, Manchester United must continue pursuing Frenkie de Jong. He could be the face of our new project and we must do everything within our means to sign a midfield prospect like him.
