Transfer News: Manchester United preparing bid for Lisandro Martinez

According to popular Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are preparing a bid for talented Argentinian defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax with Arsenal also very much in the race for the defender.

Lisandro Martinez is said to be high on the list for Erik ten Hag ahead of next season and having seen him first-hand during his time at Amsterdam, it is easy to understand why the Dutch tactician is interested in him.

The Argentinian defender joined Ajax from Defensa in 2019 and has since then gone on to become one of the best young centre-backs in Europe. His performances have only been on an upwards trend ever since.

The 24-year-old centre-back who was awarded Ajax player of the season for his exploits last season has played 36 games for the Dutch champions scoring one goal and four assists across all competitions.

One thing that works in favour of Martinez is how versatile he is. The Argentinian footballer can play as centre-back, left-back and even as a defensive midfielder. It offers managers a lot of flexibility when a player can comfortably play more than one position.

Regardless of all this, if Man United are going to sign Martinez, it is probably for him to play in his primary position at centre-back. It is a position where they could do with quality replacements and the Argentinian could be just that player.

Raphael Varane is a world-class centre-back and despite an indifferent first season at Old Trafford, the French international is likely to rediscover his best form very soon. Lisandro Martinez could be the perfect pair for the former Real Madrid man.

At 24, Lisandro Martinez is still not the finished article. He could do with some guidance and playing alongside an experienced Varane might just be what he needs. The French World Cup winner would be the senior partner and mentor Martinez along the way.
