Manchester United dealt transfer blow as Chelsea track Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong
According to The Guardian, Manchester United have been dealt a transfer blow in their pursuit of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong as Chelsea are tracking his situation right now. He has been added to the latter’s list as Todd Boehly looks to back Thomas Tuchel in the market this summer.
Man United have agreed to a deal in principle with Barca for de Jong that would cost £56.2million in guaranteed fees. However, Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that talks are ongoing when it comes to the €20million add-ons involved as of now, and common ground is yet to be reached on that front.
However, the Red Devils are focused on agreeing to personal terms with de Jong at this moment. The Blues have now entered the fray and could decide to target him in the future. That is only if a deal cannot be finalised between both Man United and the Dutchman in the coming days or weeks.
No cause for worry?
If this news is to be believed, then we would not need to be cautious about the West Londoners as they are not actively pursuing de Jong. Furthermore, their interest could only be realised if we fail to sign the 25-year-old, which still gives us control over the current situation.
Then again, it would still be best if the Manchester board completes the La Liga ace’s signing at the earliest. After all, we would not want to deal with Tuchel’s side should they change their stance and register themselves in the running in the future.
The London-based club have priorities elsewhere for this summer which should give the supporters some sigh of relief, but that may not continue to remain the same. After all, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are out of contract next summer, plus the latter has also been suffering from persistent injury issues for a while.
Even though de Jong is open to teaming up with Erik ten Hag, we should not take that for granted as the midfielder is also eager to play in the Champions League. With Tuchel also being an admirer of his talents, the Mancunians are given more reasons to facilitate a move as soon as possible.
We simply cannot afford to lose out on someone whom we have spent quite a lot of time chasing after over the past few weeks or so. It will be as detrimental for us on the pitch as it will be embarrassing off it.
