Transfer News: Manchester United consider a loan move for Alvaro Fernandez this summer

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are currently assessing their options to loan out Alvaro Fernandez on a potential move in this summer transfer window. Their decision is influenced by the fact that Feyenoord star Tyrell Malacia is close to joining them ahead of the next campaign.

Fernandez is set to be given opportunities in pre-season when Erik ten Hag will assess his performances. The defender is keen to remain with the first-team set-up and continue his growth, and any move away would need to be approved by ten Hag at first.

Despite that, it is difficult to see Fernandez playing a significant role given the imminent arrival of Malacia. As such, the Red Devils are willing to part ways with their academy prospect temporarily for the time being to ensure that he earns optimal game time to assist his development moving forward.

What’s in line for Fernandez?

It seems that allowing Fernandez to go out on loan would be the best option in the current circumstances. That would ensure that the Spanish full-back can continue to work on his progress and have a greater chance of earning a spot in the first team in the future.

If Malacia’s transfer is completed, it is quite difficult to see how Fernandez can earn minutes when the likes of Luke Shaw, Brandon Williams and Alex Telles are ahead of him. That being said, the latter two could depart Old Trafford if the Dutch star completes his move this summer.

Even with that, Shaw’s presence remains a hindrance for Fernandez, who was named the club’s U23 Player of the Year in the previous season. Having played 32 matches at the youth level, he has mustered four goals and six assists which showcases how he earned that award in the last campaign.

But that is not enough to earn a spot in the first team as of now. Hence it would be wise to let Fernandez leave on loan so that he could garner valuable senior-level experience rather than playing in the developmental stages.

Fortunately, the 19-year-old has already attracted attention from several Championship sides regarding a possible loan move. That certainly favours us right now, so let’s wait and see how this situation develops in the coming days or weeks.
