Manchester United could present Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong as their new signing this weekend
According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports on Twitter, Manchester United could present Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong as their new signing this coming weekend. If this news is proven to be true, then it would undoubtedly be a massive statement indeed when it comes to our plans to build the new project.
Erik ten Hag was desperate to reunite with de Jong at Old Trafford, and now it looks like he will get his wish after all. It is claimed that the midfielder is close to completing his switch to England, with the deal being in the final stages at this moment. That being said, Man United are not in the safe zone just yet as the move is still not 100 percent for the time being.
Even so, it is stated that de Jong could officially be announced this weekend with him also possibly being presented as a Red Devils player in the process. In fact, there are plans to even showcase his signing at Theatre of Dreams which would be perfect for a statement signing like the Dutch international.
Could it happen?
This latest information could probably be true, considering how the ever-reliable Samuel Luckhurst, the club’s chief writer for Manchester Evening News, had revealed yesterday that we have an agreement in principle with Barca regarding the 25-year-old midfielder’s transfer.
Furthermore, signing the La Liga ace only cost us £56.14million in guaranteed fees which is a very good price indeed. While that could rise with add-ons, which is stated to be €20million by Fabrizio Romano, the additional cost would probably align with how de Jong performs with us and the targets that will be achieved during his time with us.
Hence, the increased expenditure would not be a blow as that could only be down to the Blaugrana superstar being successful in Manchester. In any case, reuniting de Jong with ten Hag would do wonders for our midfield that has struggled long before the previous campaign.
One could say that we are in line for exciting times ahead, looking at how the Dutch compatriots fared during their time together at Ajax. We have often struggled to maintain control and composure in the centre of the pitch, which was made worse by Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba’s exits.
That would not be the case anymore with de Jong’s arrival, although we must complete a move soon to get rid of all the uncertainties. Romano also claimed that personal terms are in line to be discussed, which the fans would hope to be successful in the coming days.

There have been suggestions that de Jong intends to stay at Camp Nou even after the agreement between both clubs. That has created some worries as we are yet to agree on the player side of things. Let’s hope that the board can solve the final hurdle and facilitate this move shortly.
This will be a headline signing for us- one that can define ten Hag’s era at Old Trafford. If he can unlock the best in Donny van de Beek as well, then we could relive one of the most exciting midfield partnerships in recent years.
