Transfer News: Manchester United need to shell out £70m for Antony

According to @DiscoMirror via Utd District [h/t Manchester Evening News], Manchester United have learnt the asking price for Brazilian winger Antony with Ajax asking for at least £70m for the player.

Man United’s interest in Antony is no secret with new manager Erik ten Hag keen on bringing the talented Brazilian who he worked with at Amsterdam to Old Trafford. Antony has been making all the right noises in recent seasons with his performances.

Highly rated ever since his move to Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2020, Antony has gone on to become one of the best young wingers in Europe. His performances have not gone unnoticed with many clubs interested in the Brazilian.

This season, Antony played 32 times for ten Hag’s team at Amsterdam scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions. Equally adept at scoring and creating chances, his all-rounded nature is something that makes the Brazilian standout.

However, Man United’s pursuit of the Brazilian wide man is going to be far more difficult than imagined with Ajax set to hold out for a big transfer fee from the English club. It is being claimed that Antony could cost around £70m for the Red Devils.

Despite the fact that a winger is not the priority for Man United this summer, Antony is a player who is too hard to refuse. Considering the fact that Erik ten Hag wants him despite the plethora of options available, maybe this is a statement of intent from the Dutch tactician.

The former Ajax manager is coming into a new club and may be looking to stamp his authority over the team. Bringing in players he wants to sign might go a long way in establishing ten Hag as the boss in the dressing room.

However, we also have other areas to reinforce this summer and it remains to be seen if we are willing to spend £70m on a position where we could manage without reinforcement. Anthony Elanga, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are all solid first-team options.

The Red Devils also have young talents like Facundo Pellistri, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo waiting in the wings for a chance in the first team and signing Antony could slow down their progress.

The Man United – Antony saga is not going to die down any time soon. It remains to be seen how the Red Devils are willing to handle the situation and they have to make a decision on whether they are willing to fork out the £70m.
