Harry Maguire set to stay at Manchester United despite impending loss of captaincy
According to Mail Plus, Manchester United are set to keep Harry Maguire in the squad next season but the English international is set to be stripped of his armband responsibilities at Old Trafford.
Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 but things haven’t gone according to plan with the English international not living up to the hype and becoming a huge laughing stock during his time at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old central defender has played 37 times for the Red Devils this season scoring two goals and providing no assists across all competitions. The English international lost his place on the team a few times last season to Victor Lindelof.
It has now emerged that the Manchester United captain is set to keep his place in the squad for next season but his armband responsibilities are set to be stripped off ahead of next season.
High time for a change?
It is high time the decision was made to relieve Harry Maguire of armband responsibilities. In fact, it’s baffling that he was given the responsibility in the first place.
The past season was an utter disappointment for Maguire. He was horrendous for the Red Devils at times and almost always had a mistake in him. Many a time he was saved by the heroics of David de Gea.
Whilst the English international is a very decent defender, he does not have what it takes to be a starter at a club of Manchester United’s stature. It would have been more ideal for United to transfer him but maybe he could prove to be a utility squad player for Erik ten Hag.
The Red Devils need to find a new quality centre-back to partner Raphael Varane ahead of next season and cannot start another season with Maguire as a starter. It has not worked out in the past and it is highly unlikely to happen in the future.
