Transfer News: Chelsea ahead of Manchester United in race for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

According to Football.London, Chelsea are ahead of Manchester United in the pursuit of Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic due to Erik ten Hag’s insistence to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona as a priority.

Milinkovic-Savic joined Lazio from Genk in 2015 and has since then gone on to become one of the best midfielders in the Italian top flight. He has continued to stay at SS Lazio for a number of years despite the Italians not mounting a serious charge for the biggest trophies in Italy or Europe.

Fans who have seen him play would agree that he has what it takes to play at a ‘bigger’ club- one where plays in a team that competes for silverware on a regular basis.

The 27-year-old player has played 47 games for the Serie A club this season scoring 11 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions. Such numbers are exceptional for a midfield player and there is a reason why the Serbian is held in such high regard.

Manchester United and Chelsea are both interested in signing the player but the Blues have a significant advantage in the race since the Red Devil’s priority lies elsewhere.

A solid option?

Manchester United have been obsessed with signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona this season and are extremely involved in that pursuit.

However, putting all our eggs in one basket is never a good solution and Milinkovic-Savic could be yet another player we miss out on because of the pursuit of the Dutchman. In the end, if we manage to bring in Frenkie, it’s fine but if we fail in that pursuit we might find ourselves short of options.

Capable of playing in central and attacking midfield, the Lazio man offers versatility that Erik ten Hag might like. He is also as important a presence off the ball as he is on it, which is always a plus if we want someone to play in central midfield.

Frenkie de Jong is a different kind of midfielder to Milinkovic-Savic but both players would be amazing signings to kickstart ten Hag’s era at Old Trafford. After all, the midfield is an area where we need reinforcements and both players will be good additions.

If we had to choose between the two for one player, it seems more likely that we pursue Frenkie de Jong to Milinkovic-Savic but either player would be a great signing for Man Utd. It remains to be seen who we end up signing though.
