Erik ten Hag to put Manchester United transfer plans on hold until his priority transfer target is signed on

According to The Daily Mail (h/ The Metro), Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is risking it all this summer by putting the club’s transfer business on hold until his priority transfer target is signed.

The Red Devils are yet to make a single major signing this summer despite the need to revamp their squad. Several players have been linked with a move but nothing has materialized yet.

With a comparatively modest £120million transfer war chest, ten Hag has to be astute with his dealings. Bringing in priority transfers remains the best way to go forward as we cannot afford to continue to throw money at problems.

One name who has been constantly linked with Man United is Frenkie de Jong. The Barcelona man made a name for himself under Erik ten hag at Ajax Amsterdam and continues to impress the Dutch boss to this day.

He believes that the Netherlands international will be a key piece in his Man United rebuild and is keen to land him on a priority basis. He had hoped that Barcelona’s financial instability would pave the way for a sale. But so far, that has been found wanting.

The Red Devils are in need of a midfielder who can set the tempo for their style. As things stand, neither Fred nor Scott McTominay can do that. Such a midfielder has been a priority for some time now and ten Hag appears keen to get it right this time around.

While ten Hag’s insistence on prioritizing de Jong is understandable, time is running out for the club to make their move. The Red Devils have been involved in negotiations with Barcelona for some time now and are no closer to landing the 25-year-old.

While it makes sense to be stubborn in the transfer market, there lies the risk that we could jeopardize other orders of transfer business by putting all our eggs in one basket. Signing de Jong should be a priority but the club should not develop tunnel vision and not pursue multiple deals at the same time.

Time will tell if the Red Devils have learned their lessons or will continue to dilly dally in negotiations. Given that the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are already strengthening their squads, we cannot afford to be left even further behind.
