Transfer News: Manchester United still in negotiations with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong
According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are still negotiating with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong despite the economic boost that the Spanish club received recently.
Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and has since then gone on to have a very curious time at Camp Nou. Exceptional at times and almost always consistent, the Dutchman has performed well for the Spanish club.
Despite this, the player always tends to be at the end of criticism that he does not do enough to justify his potential. This season, the 25-year-old has played 46 games for Xavi Hernandez’s side scoring four goals and providing five assists across all competitions.
With Barcelona expecting a financial boost in the coming days, it was thought they might not sell De Jong after all. However, it has now emerged that they are still negotiating with Man Utd on the transfer fee with the player’s wages still a huge problem for the Catalan club.
Spend the big bucks?
Now that Barcelona are in a better financial position, they might not be desperate to sell Frenkie de Jong and this will make them hold out for a bigger price for the midfield superstar.
Following in the footsteps of greats like Xavi and Andres Iniesta is never an easy task, which is why despite his impressive performances on several occasions, Barca struggle to fully appreciate the Dutchman’s abilities at times.
One person who managed to make de Jong play at those high levels almost every single game during their time in Amsterdam was new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and he certainly knows how to use his compatriot.
The 25-year-old midfield superstar could be the perfect signing for Man Utd. He is probably the best player to lead the new project under the new manager and would be the face of the midfield for many years to come.
