Transfer News: Manchester United may need to sell Anthony Martial to sign new forwards

According to ESPN (h/t Mirror), Manchester United may need to move on French striker Anthony Martial if they are to pursue deals for Brazilian winger Antony or Bundesliga breakout star Christopher Nkunku ahead of the summer.

Martial joined Manchester United from Monaco back in 2015 and after a few bright seasons initially, he has fallen off the cliff dramatically with respect to the scheme of things at Old Trafford. The former French wonderkid was loaned out to Sevilla in January in the hopes that he’d discover some of his lost spark but it did not pan out as planned.

The 26-year-old striker has played 23 times for both the clubs combined this season scoring a paltry two goals and providing one assist across all competitions in both leagues. For a player who was once touted to be the next big thing in football, his career has spiralled dramatically.

Unsurprisingly, Sevilla chose not to sign the player and he finds himself at Old Trafford ahead of next season under a new manager. Whilst the Frenchman might want to impress again at Manchester, it does seem like United consider him expendable as they focus on bringing in other forward players like Antony and Christopher Nkunku.

Turning the page?

Martial is only 26 and there is a chance that he could resurrect his career and become the player he once promised to be all those years ago.

However, it does seem like United are closing the book on the chapter titled ‘Anthony Martial’ and moving on to players they seem to think will lead the club in the right direction in the present and the future.

Two such players linked with the club include Christopher Nkunku and Antony. The French hybrid striker has had a season to remember in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig. He has been the breakout star of the season in Germany and it remains to be seen if the Red Devils would have a clear path to sign him.

Antony on the other hand has been a consistent performer in Erik ten Hag’s Ajax side over the past couple of seasons. The Dutch tactician seemingly rates the Brazilian winger very highly and wants to bring him to Old Trafford along with him.

Whilst we do have quality options as such in the forward areas and midfield and defence is probably the area we need to focus on more, adding more quality to the forward line is always welcome and will only bring about healthy competition.

United are in the midst of a rebuild. They want to make signings. If selling Anthony Martial is the way to go about it, then the Frenchman should indeed be sold in the upcoming summer- at least that’s what most of our fans would tell you.
