Transfer News: Manchester United sceptical about Marco Asensio asking price

According to the Mirror (via Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are sceptical about pursuing a deal for Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio due to his asking price of £43 million and are unlikely to pursue their interest any further.

Asensio joined Real Madrid from Espanyol in 2016 and has had a fairly successful stint at the Spanish capital over the past seven seasons. Brilliant during his formative years with the Los Blancos, a serious injury derailed the Spaniard’s progress but he is surely getting back to his best.

The 26-year-old Spanish winger has played 42 times for the Champions League winning side this season scoring 12 goals and providing two assists across all competitions. Despite these being very decent numbers, Asensio is capable of much more.

With a contract expiring next summer, many clubs are interested in securing the forward’s services and Man United are one of them. However, the asking price of £43 million is set to throw the Red Devils off course.

Financial sense?

Anyone who has seen Asensio play knows that the Spaniard is an extremely talented player and can offer a lot to Man United.

However, having seen our own share of transfers where we have overpaid for a player who has flopped massively for us, financial sense needs to prevail with respect to Asensio.

Whilst the Spaniard is surely worth the money Real Madrid are asking for him in normal circumstances, Asensio’s contract winds down in a year and he could be available for a free next summer.

In such a scenario, it only makes sense to pursue the Spaniard if he is offered at a bargain price. The Spanish giants themselves want to keep Asensio and have offered him a new deal and it is maybe due to that reason that they are holding out for a huge sum.

If Real Madrid relax their demands, then we can always get back into the race for Asensio. Else, it is best that we do not spend that amount of cash on the Spaniard and look for other options.
