Transfer News: Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag sets Frenkie de Jong deadline
According to the Mirror (via Manchester Evening News), Erik ten Hag has decided to move on to other midfield targets if the club is unable to get a deal done for Barcelona midfield superstar Frenkie de Jong by the end of next week.
Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and has since then gone on to have a very mixed time at the Camp Nou. Scintillating at his best, the Dutchman has performed well for the Blaugrana but there is often a feeling that he could do more.
The 25-year-old midfielder has played 46 times for the Spanish giants this season scoring four goals and providing five assists across all competitions. Whilst his performances have not been atrocious by any means, his potential and talent means he is always expected to do more.
Manchester United’s interest in procuring de Jong is no secret now and it has now emerged that new boss Erik ten Hag has decided that if a move does not materialise for the Barcelona midfielder by the end of next week, other options will be looked at.
A victim of his own talent?
Frenkie de Jong is a truly world class player and has undoubtedly all the skills required to succeed in any club in the world.
However, there is a feeling that the Dutchman is becoming a victim of his own talent and it is because of the unbelievable abilities that he possesses that he is almost always expected to do everything on the football field.
The 25-year-old broke into the picture under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and a reunion with his former boss could just do him the world of good. The Dutch tactician knows how to best out of his star man and it could be the perfect match.
Although more comfortable playing in a midfield two where he has the liberty to drive the ball forward, de Jong can play a variety of roles in midfield and his versatility and potential knows no bounds.
