Barcelona lower the asking price for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong
According to Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Barcelona are set to lower the asking price for Frenkie de Jong to £70m from the previously demanded £85m amidst interest from Manchester United for the player.
De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and has since then had a very mixed time at the Nou Camp over these three years. The Dutchman has performed pretty decently for the Spanish giants but there is a feeling that he did not perform to his potential.
The 25-year-old has played 46 times for the Catalan club this season, scoring four goals and making five assists across all competitions. With a contract until 2026, it is no surprise that Barcelona are holding out for big money for the Dutch midfielder.
The Spanish giants were demanding £85m for their star midfielder until now but it does look like Barcelona are willing to relax their stance for the Dutchman. This will come as a boost for the Red Devils who continue to monitor his situation.
Good news for United?
It is not news anymore that the Red Devils are keen on signing Frenkie de Jong for next season and Barcelona lowering their price is good news for the Premier League club.
At £70m, United will be getting the Barcelona midfielder for a great value for money deal and it does seem like the Red Devils will have to spend at least this much if they want to get a player of de Jong’s quality.
Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are leaving the club this summer. This leaves a hole in the midfield that needs to be assessed. Man United need a midfielder and a quality one at that and de Jong fits the bill.
Having previously worked under Erik ten Hag at Ajax back during his time in Amsterdam, the Dutch tactician will know how to get the best out of Frenkie de Jong at Old Trafford and it could be a match made in heaven.
